Whitesville, Kentucky (April 12, 2021)-Kentucky Motor Speedway celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2021. The famed oval in rural Eastern Daviess County has been the breeding grounds for numerous competitors including NASCAR’s Waltrip brothers, Green brothers, and Jeremy Mayfield. The track was renovated in 2002, by current owner Willie Stroup to its current configuration. Even though Kentucky Motor Speedway has gone through numerous changes in its 60-year history; one thing has remained the same, it is the track where “action is the attraction.”
Local businessman and race enthusiast, Scott Slaton will be returning as the promoter for his 2nd season at the Whitesville track. With a shortened season in 2020, Slaton looks forward to a more normal weekly schedule in 2021, while still practicing social distance guidelines. “2020 was a challenging season with the COVID 19 Pandemic. Even with the restrictions, we had a successful season. 2021 is going to be a great season to celebrate the 60th anniversary of KMS,” said Slaton.
The 2021 racing season includes a 28-week scheduled program with numerous events visiting not only Kentucky Motor Speedway for an inaugural visit, but also the Commonwealth of Kentucky for the first time. The “King of the Wing” Sprint cars will be making an appearance on Thursday, August 5th for a “Thursday Night Thunder” event. The King of the Wing is sure to be a highlight of the 60th Anniversary season. “When you get the opportunity to bring in a division that has never been here before with an Indy Car driver as the series director you do it. These cars have never been to the state of Kentucky. We are excited about the opportunity and think the community will love it.”
Kentucky Motor Speedway will also be welcoming the Super Cup Stock Car Series (SCSCS) for their season finale and stop number 2 on the Kentuckiana Dual Weekend. “We’re really happy to bring our series to Kentucky Motor Speedway. Salem Speedway and KMS working together to make this Kentuckiana Dual Weekend happen is a major step to bring our type of cars to this part of the country. We look forward to holding more races in the area in the future. We’re currently working with a few sponsors to potentially film the September event to be televised at a later date for MAVTV Motorsports Network. Our drivers are excited about coming to the site of where such legendary racers as Darrell Waltrip and the Green brothers got their start” said series director, Joe Schmaling.
Other events on the 2021 schedule include 3 late model events, a visit from the USAC midgets, visits from the Midwest Asphalt Kart Series and the annual Kentucky Asphalt Championship on Labor Day weekend. “Every Sunday is a must-see event, but we really look forward to bringing some of our highlighted events to the fans at KMS. Last year’s Kentucky Asphalt Championship was side-by-side racing action for 150 laps. We expect nothing less in 2021” said promoter, Scott Slaton.
KMS is also planning events to recognize past racers, employees, announcers and track promoters. “Racers are an important part of the track’s 60 years, but it wouldn’t have made it without track employees and promoters over the years. We are planning on recognizing all of these people in 2021,” said Slaton.
The 2021 season kicks off this weekend with a season opening car show at Moonlite BBQ on Saturday from 11am until 1pm. The opening night of racing is Sunday, April 18th featuring Sportsman, Super Street, Pure Stock, Hobby Stock, Mini Stock, Scrappers, Young Guns, Ford Oval, Ford Figure 8, & Ford Powder Puff. Gates open at 2pm, with racing beginning at 5pm.
